چکیده

By simulating a multi-terminal high voltage DC grid using a detailed electro-magnetic transient simulation model, challenges in fault detection and discrimination are demonstrated. To select the most appropriate signal for fast and reliable detection of faults, behavior of the DC grid during the faults is observed by means of various terminal measurements. By simulating different scenarios, challenging situations for discriminating faults in the protected line from the reverse faults, faults on the other pole, and from the remote breaker opening events are demonstrated. Influence of such disturbances on fault detection algorithms is evaluated and a method to discriminate faults in the protected line from the faults behind the relay is presented. Time taken to detect various faults in a typical high voltage DC grid is evaluated.

Benefits of Operating a Four Terminal HVDC Network with a Normally Open Point

It is likely that any HVDC grids will evolve over time and will likely be multi-vendor and use several different technologies. This paper studies a four terminal network where the interconnecting link is operated as a normally open point. This allows the network to be reconfigured in the event of DC side fault, without the need for DC circuit breakers. The network uses the popular Modular Multi...

An Intelligent Protection Method for Multi-terminal DC Microgrids Using On-line Phaselet, Mathematical Morphology, and Fuzzy Inference Systems

In this paper, a new method for fault detection, location, and classification in multi-terminal DC microgrid (MTDC) is proposed. MTDC grids have expanded due to some issues such as the expansion of DC resources, loads, and aims to increase power quality. Diagnosing the types and location of faults is important to continue the service and prevent further outages. In this method, a circuit kit is...

The Effect of Grid Topology on Transient Fault Currents in Multi-Terminal VSC-HVDC Offshore Networks

This paper investigates different network topologies of potential future DC offshore grids with respect to their impact on transient fault currents for permanent single pole-toground faults. Investigations are carried out on a twelve-terminal ±320kV VSC-HVDC network modeled around the physical topology of the North Sea. Results are obtained through EMTP simulations in PSCAD using a detailed, fr...

Multi-Terminal DC System line Protection Requirement and High Speed Protection Solutions

For long distance and high power transmission, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission is a preferred solution due to its technical and economic advantages. A multi-terminal HVDC (MTDC) transmission system either based on voltage source converters (VSC) or line-commutated converters (LCC) has also been introduced recently. With the development of fast and high breaking capability HVDC c...

Requirements for Fault Protection in HVDC Grids

Conventional Voltage Source Converters (VSC) cannot interrupt DC fault currents and DC circuit breakers are not yet commercially available for HVDC power ratings. Thus, the protection of VSC-HVDC systems is still an obstacle for the development of this technology. The features of VSC-HVDC systems make them suitable for implementing HVDC grids. Nevertheless, HVDC grids are more complex than poin...
